Dr. Corinna Giera
My path to becoming a lipedema surgeon:
Born in 1978 and raised in Landshut, I discovered my interest in medicine as a girl, although initially in veterinary medicine.
After finishing my humanistic school career at the Hans-Carossa-Gymnasium in Landshut in 1997, there was consequently only one direction for me: the study of human medicine.
And here, too - you may well call it consistent - only one specialty could ignite my passion: surgery.
After graduating in 2004, I started my clinical career at the Surgical Clinic of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. Already during my studies I was intensively involved in scientific work and was active in the field of experimental surgical research for many years. Here, too, there is a clear connection to my current "sideline", i.e. research.
After many years in abdominal and general surgery and obtaining the then very complex specialty designation of general surgery, vascular surgery was to be my next field of endeavor.
After further years of university medicine in Regensburg, family reasons finally moved me to Upper Bavaria.
I gladly accepted the call to become a senior physician at a renowned vein clinic, not knowing at the time that this phase of my clinical career would not only be formative, but groundbreaking. Groundbreaking for my current specialization - lipedema surgery.
When the Vein Specialist Clinic expanded its range of services in 2018, I was entrusted with the consultation and treatment of lipedema patients. I felt early on that this clinical picture and the patients affected by it - only in a few exceptional cases men - require special professional and human qualifications. At the same time, I acquired the additional title "Lymphology" in order to be able to give my patients the best possible therapy recommendations.
In order to learn circular and radical liposuction, as required for lipedema, from scratch, I transferred to a lipedema specialist in Salzburg in October 2019. What followed were the most work-intensive, but also most fulfilling years of my professional life so far.
Lipedema surgery - for me a challenge, passion and responsibility.
